About Salem Lutheran School in Florissant, MO

Welcome from Principal

Dear Friends,

At Salem Lutheran School, we love kids.  A Christ-centered curriculum is taught to children and their families.   Salem nurtures the whole child, spiritually, intellectually, emotionally, socially, and physically, to prepare lifelong servants of Christ. Daily Bible-based curriculum, and faith-integrated lessons help students build strong relationships with God, others, and themselves.  Weekly chapels bring the family of Salem closer to our Savior as well as each other as we worship together.

As an accredited school by the National Lutheran School Accreditation (Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod) and the State of Missouri, we proclaim Jesus as Savior and serve Him as Lord. In Black Jack, Missouri, our faith foundation creates a welcoming community where every family experiences God’s love in action.

Stop by and see how kids are loved and welcomed.  We would love to show you the great activities happening inside and outside our walls.

Mr. Marc Debrick

Principal

History of Salem Lutheran School in Florissant

In the early 19th century, a small group of immigrant German Lutherans met in a one-room log cabin in Black Jack, MO to hold worship services in their native tongue. As the small group grew, they extended a “call” to a full-time pastor in September 1848. The members chose the name SALEM (Peace), dedicating themselves to “work together in love”.

From its inception, Christian education was an important part of Salem’s ministry. A Christian day school, taught by the pastor, was started almost immediately after organization. In 1888, the first full-time teacher was called. In 1895, the brick one-room schoolhouse was built and was used as a classroom until 1950. Today, Salem Lutheran School is blessed with a large building that includes a modern gym and many technology tools.

Salem has gone through several different levels of enrollment, peaking at just over 200 in the 2010s. Today, we have shifted to a multi-age learning model, leading to the smaller enrollment numbers we serve today. The current enrollment of around 43 has generated a sense of closeness among the faculty and students, allowing us to live more fully into our identity as a family in Christ at this Lutheran school in Florissant.

Both alumni and members of Salem Lutheran Church remain fiercely committed to providing for God’s work through Salem Lutheran School – a dedicated Lutheran school in Florissant, MO.
